We are an independent type foundry creating
African fonts for global use.
Based in Lagos, Nigeria, and founded in 2023 by Nigerian brand and type designer Chisaokwu Joboson, Udi grew from an interest in what African typography could be when shaped by people who live and breathe its cultures, histories, languages, and visual traditions.
The foundry explores African histories and cultural references as sources for type—creating typefaces that are expressive, contemporary, and rooted in context. Its work is also concerned with representation and digital inclusion: expanding the ways African languages, voices, and visual ideas can exist and circulate through typography.
Udi’s growing library of typefaces is an ongoing contribution to the history of African lettering, documenting contemporary interpretations of African culture while making them accessible to users everywhere. The foundry aims to build a collection of distinctive, well-crafted typefaces that can be used by African and international designers alike.
The foundry’s first release, Ojuju, was created in collaboration with Google Fonts and marked the beginning of Udi’s exploration into how cultural references can become the foundation for contemporary type.
Today, Udi’s catalogue continues to grow alongside our custom type design, lettering, and font modification work.
We make type from Africa, for the world.
